BY INDUSTRY · CHILLED AND FROZEN

Automated cold storage: the pallets stay in the cold, the people don't.

How do you add capacity to a cold store without adding cooled volume?

In cold storage every cubic metre is paid for twice: once when it is built and then every day, in cooling. Together with our partners, we automate chilled and frozen warehouses with systems that run down to −25 °C: high-density vertical storage and autonomous vehicles that move pallets between cold rooms, production lines and docks, with no operators exposed to the cold.

In brief

An automated cold storage warehouse stores pallets compactly, at height, in a smaller cooled volume, while cranes, shuttles and autonomous vehicles work where people struggle to. The result: more capacity in the same volume, traceability for every pallet and an unbroken cold chain from receiving to shipping.

WHAT WE AUTOMATE

The whole flow, coordinated by one software layer.

01

High-density storage in the cold

Cranes (AS/RS) or shuttles (AVS/RS) inside the cold room: more pallets in the same cooled volume, direct access to every SKU. Automated warehouse →

02

Autonomous transport between cold rooms and docks

Autonomous vehicles link the cold rooms to production and to the docks, on fixed routes and without doors held open. AGV/LGV systems →

03

Order picking in the cold

Automated layer or case picking for store orders, without hours of manual work in the cold. Automated picking →

WHY IT MATTERS

What you actually gain.

  • Less volume to cool. High density means less volume to cool for the same goods, so a lower energy cost per pallet.
  • No people in the cold. Routine moves are done by the systems; people step in only where they are needed, not for whole shifts at −25 °C.
  • A traceable cold chain. Every pallet keeps its history of moves and times, useful for audits and claims.
  • FEFO applied automatically. The system ships first what expires first, without relying on someone's attention on every order.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Do automated systems work at sub-zero temperatures?

Yes. Our partners' storage systems and vehicles work in chilled and frozen environments, down to −25 °C.

Can an existing cold room be automated?

Often, yes. We start from the room's dimensions, the inbound and outbound flow and the number of SKUs, then use simulation to compare the options that fit the existing building.

How is FEFO applied in an automated cold store?

The orchestration software knows the batch and expiry date of every pallet and automatically picks the one that expires first for each outbound move.
